You can create a unique and cozy design of any room in the apartment using the ceiling. After all, it is this detail that catches the eye first of all when entering the room. One of the original ideas in interior design is the multi-level plasterboard ceilings with lighting.
Drywall, due to its lightness and ease of processing, allows you to create complex three-dimensional structures, which after assembly can only be putty and painted in any color. The result is an impressive interior detail with a flat surface not inferior in beauty to expensive building materials.
A multilevel plasterboard ceiling is usually fixed to metal ceiling profiles, which are easy to cut, give them any curved shape and fasten to concrete floors with screws and dowels.
For small rooms up to 16 square meters. m enough to do 2 levels, and in spacious living rooms and halls apply 2-3 levels or more.
It is very reasonable to make a multi-level ceiling with a backlight in the room or hallway , which will add elegance and comfort to the interior. Due to the fact that the sheets of drywall are easily cut, you can directly integrate small lamps with bright or dim light directly into them. They will be a good addition to the main chandelier or natural light from the window.
Gypsum plasterboard ceilings have a number of remarkable advantages:
- Using them, you can divide the room into zones, each of which will perform a specific function.
- Built-in lights are additional lighting, with the chandelier turned off they can create a cozy twilight.
- Drywall aligns well any surface of the ceiling.
- In the niche under the GKL sheets, you can hide the wiring and other communications.
- With the help of volumetric forms and different types of lighting, you can realize any design idea.
For the installation of a backlight built into multi-level ceilings, it is worth taking economical energy-saving bulbs, which at high levels of illumination consume little electricity and practically do not heat up.
The most common option, in which multilevel plasterboard ceilings with illumination are embodied in a bedroom or a hall, is a frame with a width of 15 - 20 cm around the perimeter of the room in combination with a central part raised by 5 - 10 cm. Most often, white color is chosen for such a design, but you can experiment with other shades. The frame is easy to make: the upper tier is laid with sheets over the entire area of the ceiling, grooves of the lower tier are attached to it and the walls.
The work here is simplified by the fact that all the angles are straight, and there is no need to bend metal profiles.
Such a design of two tiers can be easily assembled in a day. Despite the simplicity of the scheme, the resulting ceiling looks spectacular, especially if you add original lighting to it. Built-in spotlights can evenly be placed in the lower frame around the perimeter of the room or make hidden lighting in niches. For the latter method, you need to slightly change the design - do not completely cover the inner side walls of the frame-box, but leave slots through which light from the lamps hidden in the niche will come.
Hidden lighting of the room has its own characteristics. Since the lamps themselves are not visible, the bright light from them does not strike the eyes, and the overall picture below can impress guests. Various designs of the profile of the ceiling niche in which the lamps will be located affect the light level. Depending on the height of the open opening and the location of the lamps, the width of the light strip also changes. It can be moderate (150 - 300 mm), bright (100 - 200 mm), very bright (50 - 100 mm) or diffuse (300 - 500 mm).
A good solution will be not only to assemble the frame of the suspended ceiling with hidden lighting, but also to make it manually adjustable. To do this, it is enough to include a small circuit in the internal wiring that changes the resistance. Then it will be possible to use a simple wall-mounted remote control to change the illumination in your room - from bright daylight to an intimate twilight.
The ceiling in the room can be divided into 2 - 3 tiers , each of which will indicate its functional area in the room. The transitions between them can be made straight, but the borders in the form of waves or other complex curves look more impressive. Plasterboard sheets are very malleable in cutting, from them it will not be difficult to create any curved line. It is more difficult to give the desired shape to the profiles on which the gypsum fiberboard is attached, but this problem is also solvable. First, the U-shaped guides are cut along the side ribs at a distance of 3-5 cm and then bent into the desired curved line.
At each of the ceiling levels, you can install your own tiered lamps. If you want to create a more illuminated area, then lamps are selected more powerful, or they are placed more often. In dark areas, 2 to 3 light points will be sufficient.
The three-level ceiling can be fully illuminated with 10-15 LED lamps with a base type E27 with a power of up to 12 W, while you can even not use a large central chandelier.
A suspended ceiling of 2 to 3 levels with illumination can be designed using a variety of designs. A minimalist ceiling frame with one step can look great even in a small room. The level adjacent to the window should be raised by 5 - 10 cm, and the level closer to the entrance should be equipped with 3-4 built-in lights. If the transition is straight, then the lamps go in one row, and if the step breaks off with a curved line, then the lamps should go along a curve.
It is not necessary to use transitions between levels across the entire width of the room. It is possible to make an elegant stepped corner with additional lighting, for example, above the desk in the study or in the nursery. Then each tier can be painted in different colors and equipped with two or three small bulbs. This corner will immediately become cozy and convenient for work.
The living room or large hall can be equipped with a ceiling with a chic design that emphasizes the status and good taste of the residents. To do this, you can create a central zone with complex geometric shapes, each of which is equipped with its own lamps, they also turn on individually.
The device of the frame and the cable routing is complicated, but as a result there is the opportunity to get a really impressive project.
Many residents prefer to equip their apartment in a modern style with straight lines, the absence of unnecessary decorative details and an abundance of modern technical equipment. Along with furniture, household appliances and walls, in such a concept, false plasterboard ceilings can also be equipped. Right angles and lines are easily made using ceiling profiles.
Even white light from built-in lamps or LED strips is added , lighting and color levels are regulated by several switches or even a remote control. Different tiers of ceilings are decorated with glossy surfaces, decorative plaster or photo printing.
False ceilings from 2 - 3 tiers in a classic design have their own characteristics. A large number of decorative elements, ornaments and stucco moldings can be used, traditional colors prevail. But with lighting, you need to be careful - instead of the built-in lights, use beautiful hanging chandeliers.
To add lighting to the room, for suspended ceilings, you can use light colors or glossy reflective surfaces. It is not recommended to hang heavy mirrors on drywall constructions; they may not be able to withstand such a weight. But instead of them, you can use many other light materials with intense gloss.
A successful and original solution is a combination of plasterboard and stretch ceilings with a glossy surface. Another way is to paint drywall sheets with shiny acrylic paint.
In general, there are many types of finishes for multi-level drywall ceilings, each of them in its own way will affect the lighting. Under the spotlights, you can use the decorative bark beetle plaster. With pendant lights, it is permissible to glue wallpaper with patterns, and for eco-style make the surface “wood-like”.
How to choose for different rooms?
The choice of the number of tiers of a multi-level ceiling depends on the area and height of the room. Each level accounts for 10 - 15 cm, so you should not make complex structures in low rooms, small-sized apartments of the Khrushchev type. The fact is that multi-tiered ceilings select useful space, visually reduce already small volumes.
For small rooms, kitchens, halls, it is enough to make 2 tiers with the same type of LED lamps with a base E27 or E14.
The situation is different in large rooms, the area of which is more than 20 square meters. m. Many want to make them a unique design with the help of multi-tiered ceilings with lighting. For spacious rooms, you can mount the frame from drywall in 2 - 3 tiers, provide it with side hidden lighting or built-in halogen, LED, fluorescent lamps.
There are a lot of design options - from classic or minimalism to ultramodern style. The main thing is not to overdo it with tiers, since too large and complex piles of volume fragments, even in a large room, will look tasteless.
It is also worth paying attention to the choice of the lamps themselves for multi-level plasterboard ceilings. By their design and methods of fastening, they are of three types: point, pendant and LED strip.
Spotlights have gained the most popularity due to their compactness, versatility and ease of installation. They are conveniently inserted into plasterboard ceilings with a niche, the housing and the entire wiring system remain inside. You can divide all the lamps in the room into groups, each of which will illuminate a separate area and turn on by a separate switch.
The front part of the spotlight has a round shape, the body is made of silver metal or plastic. The advantages of such LED lamps in a long service life and low power - they practically do not emit heat. And their energy consumption is 8 times less than that of incandescent lamps and 3 times less than energy-saving lamps with the same level of illumination. For example, a 75 W incandescent lamp can be replaced with a 12 W LED, and the room will not become darker.
Another advantage of LED lamps in the choice of light temperature, shade of white, suitable for a specific situation. There is natural white, ideal for working in the office and household chores, warm for a relaxed atmosphere in the bedroom, heavy yellow, which is suitable for the kitchen, and other types.
For pendant lights, the casing is located inside, the low weight allows their use on plasterboard ceilings. They are attached with the included device to embedded profiles. Mounts are located inside the frame. Pendant lights are very similar to traditional chandeliers, and you can install them in the hall, bedroom or children's room, but do not hang them in the kitchen or in the corridor.
LED strips are most successfully placed in a two-level drywall stream with a frame in the bedroom. These devices are similar to ordinary cables of different thicknesses, which are evenly lit throughout. The tape bends easily and takes the desired shape.
On sale there are such lamps that adjust the brightness and even color, can smoothly change them. All equipment and wiring for them can be hidden in the ceiling box.
Halogen lamps in color rendering and brightness are close to LED, although they are not so economical. But such lighting options are also well suited as built-in lighting for multi-tiered ceilings.
Especially good are IRC lamps that consume less power and do not heat up that much. They can be used, for example, for concealed lighting of plasterboard ceilings in the bedroom.
Finally, as a budget option for illuminating complex ceilings, you can use fluorescent lamps that are cheaper than halogen and LED, but they have a shorter life and cost. The cool white glow may be well suited for the hallway.
