Gladiolus Muriel is a prime example of an attractive ornamental plant. This culture is relatively rare in domestic gardening. However, it has every chance of success, you just need to get acquainted with the nuances of its cultivation.
Two-colored acidanthera by biologists is ranked in the category of monocotyledonous asparagus plants of the Iris family. They are considered part of the genus fencer. The name Gladiolus Muriel was given in honor of the discoverer of the species. In some Russian-language sources, another transcription of the name may also be used (Muriel, Muriel, Muriel).
Professional biologists have ceased to isolate the genus acidanter for a long time. But horticultural literature sometimes still mentions its existence. In some cases, the name Acidantera Muriel is also found. The natural habitat of settlement is Africa. Most commonly, bicolor open grass plants are found in:
Muriel gladioli are tuberous plants up to 1 m tall, sometimes slightly taller. Each instance has a pair of elongated xiphoid sheets. The length of each of them is approximately 0.6 m. The diameter of the flowers varies from 0.05 to 0.08 m. The usual thing for bicolor is the formation of 8-10 flowers per bush. Each bud contains 6 petals in the form of a triangle with a sharp peak. At the base, the petals have saturated raspberry, almost black or dark purple colors. Their outer side is snow-white.
The flowering of gladiolus Muriel falls on the last days of summer and the beginning of the calendar autumn. An attractive sweet aroma is characteristic. He is not very strong, but still attracts a lot of insects. The plant enjoys well-deserved popularity abroad.
The frost resistance of the culture is small, so you have to tear the corms in the autumn and keep them in dry places until warm.
Landing and care
Two-color acidifier can be grown only on thoroughly drained soil. Subject to this condition, there are no special requirements for its composition. Connoisseurs recommend putting such plants on the sunny side. Otherwise, there is a high risk that the plant will not bloom. Especially often this happens if the area has a cold climate. Then it is advisable to plant corms in the spring. Land warming up is expected (usually in March, under adverse conditions or in the north - in April). In the southern regions of our country, the landing of the gladiolus Muriel is possible in the fall. And the second option there is preferable, especially south of Volgodonsk. Planting seeds is carried out to a depth of 0.1 m; between the seedlings should be approximately 0.2 m.
Storage of bulbs before planting is possible only after careful sorting and rejection of bad specimens. Selected planting material is disinfected with fungicides. Otherwise, after some time, the planted plant will be affected by root rot. Keep the bulbs at 22 degrees for at least 14 days. Before planting, planting material is treated for 2-4 hours with a growth accelerator, choosing a drug of your choice.
For fragrant gladiolus, drainage quality is critical. It is very useful to choose a light fertile soil with a neutral or weak acid reaction. Under other conditions, the plant will also develop, but it will be more difficult to grow it, and the result will be worse. It is allowed to grow gladiolus in partial shade. The depth of the bulb in the ground is 0.1 cm; recommend putting a small amount of river sand in the wells.
Freshly planted gladioli will have to be thoroughly watered. Sometimes bulbs sprout before planting. Thanks to this technique:
- culture becomes stronger and more resilient;
- provides earlier flowering;
- total flowering time increases;
- it will be possible to initially sort the specimens by characteristics.
They usually try to germinate planting material in early March. To do this, use cups of peat 0.15 m wide. The depth of the bookmark is 0.03-0.04 m. Most often, 1 onion is used for 1 tablet. But if the diameter is 0.15 m, you can immediately put 3-5 bulbs. The tablets are placed in a warm, thoroughly lit area. In the middle lane, additional lighting is highly recommended. Muriel needs to grow and care for the seedlings of gladioli Muriel in the same way as for seedlings of other cultures. Young seedlings are watered systematically by the drip method.
Fresh air is necessary, but there should be no drafts. It is necessary to adapt the plant to the street conditions in the last month before planting. As soon as stable heat arrives, you can transplant gladioli directly into the ground. This must be done without affecting the root system. It may not be the most tender, but the risk of disrupting development is still great. Acidanthera needs abundant, but not too powerful watering. Simply put, she needs a lot of moisture. But at the same time, excessive moisture is extremely dangerous.
The leading reference should be the state of the earth. It is advisable to take into account the current weather.
In the dry period, sometimes you need to water the gladiolus daily. The drying of the trunk circle provokes the quick drying of the bulbs. Soon the plant will become weaker. During flowering, irrigation is reduced. This technique allows you to achieve greater brightness and contrast of flowers. Weed control should occur as regularly as possible. Because of them, many pests can spread. The earth will have to be loosened necessarily, otherwise even optimal watering will not allow to avoid drying of the soil. Mulching is justified. Thanks to it, weeds are eliminated and moisture in the soil is saved, and an attractive design effect is achieved.
As mulch you can use:
- rotted or crushed pine cones;
- tree bark;
- medium-sized crushed stone;
- granite crumbs.
The demanding of the gladiolus Muriel for dressings is not too great. When planting in fresh garden or garden soil with good nutritional properties, there is no need to contribute anything else. But if the soil is frankly poor, fertilizers will have to be used. The determination of the time between dressings is at your discretion. On relatively fertile land, the procedure is carried out monthly, and on scarce stony ground this is done 1 time per decade.
Optimum dosages are indicated on fertilizer packages. Overfeeding leads to increased development of the green part of plants to the detriment of flowers. Extend the flowering period will help cutting empty inflorescences. If early and wet autumn comes, gladioli should be dug up earlier than usual. Digging out can only be done in relatively warm regions.
Vegetative, onion and seed methods are suitable for this procedure. Children are separated in the autumn months. They need to be planted with the onset of spring, using simultaneously with adult specimens. Close them up to a depth equal to the height of the bulbs. The distance between plantings should match the diameter of the bulbs.
You can’t count on the appearance of flowers in the first few years. Flowering will begin in 3 or 4 seasons. It is recommended to remove prematurely appearing single flowers. Then the plant will accumulate more strength and will develop more successfully.
The seed method is laborious, but allows you to achieve the best qualities in such specimens.
Diseases and Pests
For the gladiolus of Muriel, a bulb tick, aphid, thrips, slugs are dangerous. Of the diseases - rust, powdery mildew and root rot . More often, plants affected by adverse factors are affected. The key method of struggle is the use of agricultural technology. It is undesirable to plant flowers next to crops affected by common pests and gladiolus infections.
