People from ancient times adorned their home. Stucco molding as a decorative element appeared a very long time ago. Currently, instead of bulky structures made of gypsum, cement and plaster, lighter ones made of various mixtures are used. Also popular are off-the-shelf models. In the interior, moldings are usually used in certain styles. This decor gives a special luxury.
In ancient times, stucco was created by the manufacture of solutions of cement, lime and gypsum. Such products had an impressive weight, and working with them was quite time-consuming. Now the work itself does not require much effort. To create original jewelry, a special mixture of plaster is used. In addition, finished decorative products made of polyurethane or polystyrene became popular. Such finished models are glued to any surface and, if necessary, painted in the selected color. In modern molding use:
- gypsum and cement.
Decorative ornaments made of polyurethane has a pleasant texture. Externally, the products are very reminiscent of genuine modeling. The advantage of this option is that such products tolerate temperature differences, high humidity and minor mechanical damage. If necessary, such models are used on curved surfaces, so when choosing products, you need to make sure that there is a note from the manufacturer about the necessary flexibility of the material.
Decor items made of polyurethane have high resistance to UV rays, they do not crack and do not change color after some time. Such models are usually not heavy, therefore, to fix them on the surface using liquid nails or mounting glue. After installation, polyurethane products are primed and coated with paint. On this surface, you can apply any paint. Gilding or antique bronze instantly transform the decor, giving the room a respectable look.
The most common and inexpensive is considered to be decor made of polystyrene foam. Styrofoam skirting boards are practical and durable. But this material has a drawback: dents can remain on it when pressed. That is why foam parts are recommended for use in inaccessible places, for example, on the ceiling. Polystyrene products are not flexible enough. In the case of slight curvature on the surface or when pressed on them, they may break.
Polystyrene products are difficult to paint, because this material has a porous surface. For full staining, apply 2-3 coats of paint.
Stucco made of gypsum looks very aesthetically pleasing. The disadvantages of this material can only be attributed to the difficulty in working with it, since the required skills are required. On sale there are not only ready-made elements, but also special mixtures for bas-reliefs or the creation of curls and patterns.
There are several types of stucco molding.
- Skirting board. This is the name of the slats, which serve to hide the seams in the place where the floor connects to the wall. They are made of wood or plastic. Usually they are chosen to match the tone of the coating.
- Cornice. This element is a bar for covering the corners between the joints.
- Moldings are planks with patterns. They use molding to hide the joints of various materials, to design arches, cornices, frames.
- Bas-reliefs are sculptural compositions that protrude above the plane.
- Sockets are used to frame lighting fixtures. They are presented in the form of moldings of various shapes.

Moldings must be of high quality. It is important that the joints between the parts are invisible . When designing premises, it is necessary that the products are positioned while maintaining proportions and functionality, while the design rules are followed. When designing a room, it is important to consider some factors:
- size required for composition;
- the ratio of the size of stucco molding and free space in the room;
- material selected to create the structure.

When designing premises or repairing an apartment or a house, it should be borne in mind that stucco molding may not always be appropriate. So, in a small living room it is not recommended to hang massive products or place niches. It will be more appropriate to have a ceiling cornice and a plinth. Massive molding with elaborate elements is more suitable for a large room. Stucco molding should emphasize advantages and hide flaws. Such decorations complement the interior, but you need to be able to use them appropriately. If stucco decorations are present in one of the rooms, it is advisable that they be in neighboring rooms. In small rooms with a low overhanging ceiling, this design will seem cumbersome.

For large rooms and the hall, products in the Empire, Baroque or Rococo style are more suitable. In a room decorated in Provence, Art Deco or Art Nouveau style, modeling is also appropriate.
