A microphone is a device that greatly simplifies communication in Skype, allows you to support voice communication in computer videos or conduct high-quality online broadcasts, and generally performs many important functions for a PC user. Connecting a useful gadget to a computer occurs according to fairly simple instructions.
How to connect through the connector?
Most laptops go on sale with a built-in high-quality microphone, so they do not need to connect an additional device. However, if there is a need to create high-quality recordings or if you plan to sing karaoke, "establish communication" between the devices is quite simple. The first step is to check if there is a microphone jack at all in the laptop. Look for a connector in red or pink, the diameter of which is 3.5 millimeters. In its absence, you will need to acquire a special adapter or splitter.
The adapter looks like a small device, on one side of which you can connect a regular wired microphone, the other side of which itself “fits” with the laptop’s USB port.
A splitter is a cable whose black end should be inserted into a standard headset jack for a telephone. From the other end there are two branches, usually green and red. The first is for connecting to speakers, and the second is for “docking” with a red microphone jack.
To connect the microphone to a desktop computer, you will have to use approximately the same circuit. First, you need to find a connector with a diameter of 3.5 mm - on a PC, it is located on the system unit. However, some microphones themselves have a 6.5 mm connector, and they will already require a special adapter that is compatible with two types of devices. Determining the diameter of the microphone is quite simple if you carefully examine the box in which it was located at the time of purchase. As a rule, this information is placed in the list of main characteristics specified by the manufacturer.
When connecting the adapter to the computer, it is important not to mix up the connectors. Many models have two sockets with the same diameter of 3.5 millimeters, but differ in color. In this case, green is designed for headphones, but pink or red is suitable for a microphone. The easiest way to attach a “loop” to a computer is by using a special splitter adapter. You need to connect it to the pink jack, since green is for headphones. The plugs of the splitter itself are usually “mated” with the sockets of the sound card. If the laptop has a combined headset jack, then an adapter is not required - the lapel microphone can be connected directly.
A studio microphone connects to a desktop computer or laptop in two ways. If the gadget is used simply for communication, then it is connected to the line input using the appropriate adapter. For more serious purposes, it is better to connect the microphone to the mixer, and it to the computer.
How to connect a wireless microphone?
The easiest way to connect a computer and a wireless microphone is to use a Bluetooth connection. In its absence, you can use a USB port or adapter with a special TRS-connector or a classic USB-connector. Since a microphone for installation and a USB flash drive is usually supplied with the microphone, no problems should arise with this. First, the USB flash drive is inserted into the corresponding slot, then the installation disk is activated. Following his instructions, it will turn out to carry out the installation and prepare the gadget for work. The TRS connector connects to a special Jack ¼ adapter, and it is already plugged into the pink connector.
USB plugs into any available free port.
In the case when the wireless microphone is connected via Bluetooth, start the process by turning on the gadget itself and checking the battery charge. Next, the computer activates the search for devices that support the connection. Having found a microphone in the list, it remains only to connect a laptop or computer to it. The device driver in this case is installed automatically, but you can also independently find and download the software module from the official website of the microphone manufacturer.
The final step in connecting a microphone is to adjust the sound. Having displayed the “Control Panel” screen, you need to go to the “Sounds and Devices” menu. Next, the “Audio” section opens, in it - “Sound Recording” and, finally, the “Volume” tab. By clicking on the word “Microphone”, you can increase the playback volume to the desired level. As a rule, for good use should be set to a maximum. After applying the “Amplification” function, the changes made must be saved. In the same menu, sound defects and noise are eliminated using the “Noise Reduction” function.
If the microphone is connected to a computer running Windows 7, it is recommended that you also update the sound driver during setup. The easiest way to do this is if Realtek hd is present in the system, after installing the update it will succeed and automatically update the necessary driver. Subsequent microphone setup is as follows. In the “Control Panel”, “Equipment” is selected, and then the user follows the “Record” - “Microphone” chain. By right-clicking on the word “Microphone”, you can see its possible properties.
Having opened the “Levels” section, the roller must be pulled up to “100”, but if headphones are already connected, then leave it at the level of “60-70”.
“Gain” is usually set at decibel level “20”. All updated settings are necessarily saved.
Setting up the microphone in the Windows 10 operating system is carried out according to a different algorithm. By right-clicking on the volume icon, you need to find the “Recorder” section. On the “Recording” tab, “Microphone Properties” opens, and then the “Advanced” section is displayed. The “Format Default” function is ticked off, and the “Studio Quality” function is also applied. The changes made are either applied or simply saved.
In the microphone settings menu, regardless of the system used, you can find approximately the same parameters and functions. Studying the contents of the General tab, the user will be able to change the microphone icon, its icon and name, as well as find out information about the available drivers. On the same tab, the microphone is disconnected from the main device. The tab “Listen” gives you the opportunity to hear the sound of your voice, which is necessary to check the microphone.
The maximum benefit to the user can bring the tab "Levels". It is on it that the volume is adjusted, and also, if necessary, the connection of amplification. As a rule, the volume is maintained at the level of 20-50, although for quieter devices, a value of 100 is required, as well as additional gain. In addition, the recording format, exclusive mode and signal processing settings are determined for the microphone, which is usually required only for studio recording. Changing settings should always be completed by clicking on the “Apply” button to save.
How to check?
Having completed the connection to a stationary computer or laptop, be sure to check the quality of the gadget. There are several ways to accomplish this. The first involves the use of operating system settings. In the main menu of the computer, you need to activate the "Control Panel" tab, and then go to the "Sound" section. Having found the “Record” submenu, you need to left-click on the word “Microphone” and select the “Listen” function.
On the same tab, it is important to note the selection of the “Listen from this device” function.
The second method of checking the operation of the microphone involves using it to record a voice message. Using the “Sound Recorder” function, you will need to play the resulting audio file, as a result of which it will become clear whether the microphone works well. In principle, you can also test the gadget using any program involving the use of audio. For example, you can go into Skype and call the administrator, after which the program will offer to create a short voice message, which will then be voiced. If the voice is clearly audible, this means that everything is in order with the microphone.
When connecting the gadget to a stationary computer, it is important to remember that the necessary connector can be located both on the rear panel of the system unit, and on the front. At the back, it usually borders on the same jacks with a diameter of 3.5 mm, designed for headphones and multi-channel speakers, and in front it is located next to USB ports. In all cases, you should focus on the pink color of the connector, as well as on a small image of the microphone itself. Choosing between the front and rear panels, experts still recommend giving preference to the second one, since the front one is not always connected to the system board.
For accurate verification of the connected microphone through the “Record” tab, it is recommended to look at the scale located to the right of the image of the connected device. If the stripes turn green, then the gadget perceives and records sound, but if they remain gray, this indicates that the microphone on the laptop does not work.
