Nowadays, many design solutions are embodied in bathrooms. The room for hygienic procedures has turned into an elegant place with maximum functionality and amenities. For even more comfortable use of the bathrooms, you need to choose a high-quality countertop under the sink.
Instead of the cabinet under the sink or the usual shelves, today a horizontal surface is set up, which can be used as a large table. On it you can place all the necessary accessories for your own hygiene. A sink and faucet are harmoniously mounted on the surface. A washing machine, laundry basket and practical drawers for towels or other items are quietly placed under the countertop.
When choosing, you must first pay attention to the room in which the countertop is installed. The constant influence of steam, water, high humidity and temperature changes forms specific requirements for the materials from which it should be made. Therefore, when choosing a countertop, you need to consider not only decorative and aesthetic parameters, but also the features for caring for it, as well as the functional properties of the product.
In addition, it must be remembered that the working surface of the countertop with a washbasin during continuous operation will be exposed to various cleaning and detergents.
The countertop in the bathroom is also a separate element of the interior. They differ from each other in their configuration, dimensions and dimensions, the materials from which they are made, as well as the method of fastening. Sometimes several sinks can be located on the same countertop. They can be angular, multi-level and with various interior bends.
An important nuance in the installation of countertops is the fastening of the structure.
According to the method of attachment, countertops are divided into three types.
- Overhead. They are installed on the floor with supports or legs, like a table or a pedestal.
- Outboard. Suspended to the wall using special durable brackets.
- Semi-suspended. One side is suspended from the wall as in a suspended mounting option, and the second is installed on the floor, as in the attached mounting option.
According to the design, countertops are also divided into three types.
- Solid-cast - a countertop, which with a sink are one. This countertop is not collapsible.
- With built-in washbasin. A hole is cut in the countertop for the size of the built-in sink.
- With overhead sink. An overhead sink is mounted on top of the countertop, which can be easily replaced if necessary.
You can mount a round sink or in the form of a bowl.
Today, manufacturers of bathroom furniture use a variety of high-tech equipment and the latest technology, so they can offer countertops made of a variety of materials.
A natural stone
Suitable for those who value quality and decent appearance. Such a countertop looks very noble and expensive. It has significant weight. It is also worth noting that the stone cut pattern on such a countertop is nowhere and will never be repeated, as it is unique. Its main advantages are heat resistance, durability, wear resistance. Such a surface is almost impossible to damage, and if scratches have formed, then they can be easily polished. The disadvantages of this material include the large weight of the product, high cost, complexity in installation and processing.
Basically, for the manufacture of countertops use marble and granite. Much less often - quartz, onyx and gabbro (solidified magma). Installation of such a countertop, as a rule, costs one third of the cost of the product itself, and it is unlikely that it will be possible to install such an interior item on its own.
It looks no worse than natural, while the choice of colors and various decorative solutions is much wider than that of natural stone. The design itself, in comparison with the natural counterpart, is slightly lighter in weight.
It is divided into two types.
- Acrylic stone , which is the most common material in the production of countertops. It consists of acrylic resin, mineral chips and various colored pigments. The main advantages of this stone are maintainability, the ability to manufacture complex shapes, easy care, the cost is significantly lower than natural stone, invisible joints. Disadvantages: low strength, stains from acids and paints remain, low heat resistance, difficulty in installation and processing.
- Quartz agglomerate. It consists of quartz, granite or marble chips, polyester resin and various additives and dyes. It is produced using high pressure, which gives the material excellent strength. This stone should highlight the following advantages: durability, heat resistance, ease of care. Disadvantages: not repaired, difficulty in installation and processing, heavy weight, high cost compared to acrylic stone, there is no possibility of manufacturing complex structures.
The countertops for the bathroom sink are made of three types of wood: oak, larch, teak. Manufacturers also offer countertops glued from pieces of various tree species and impregnated with moisture-resistant liquids. In any case, these surfaces need to be coated with more than one layer of special varnish.
Advantages of wood: ease of installation and processing, the ability to manufacture complex shapes. Disadvantages: low strength, dubious durability.
The glass top is universal, since glass, especially transparent, will fit almost any interior.
Also there are:
- frosted glass countertops - they are most popular because they do not cast shadows, cover the contents under the countertop and scratches are almost invisible on them;
- optical glass countertops - equipped with LED backlight, which creates a beautiful lighting effect around;
- colored glass products with patterns and unique appearance - are created from several layers, each of which can be of a different color, with beautiful drawings, and also have 3D effects;
- tinted - are made of special thermally tempered glass or tinted with a film on the inside of the surface;
- mirrored - are used extremely rarely due to the fact that any defects and even minor drops of water and fingerprints are perfectly visible on the surface.
Despite their fragile appearance, glass countertops are quite durable and not so easy to break. The advantages of glass countertops: ease of care, heat resistance, durability, low cost. Disadvantages: fragility during installation, processing and operation.
MDF and particleboard
Many relate to countertops from these materials, to put it mildly, skeptically. But due to their low cost and ease of installation, they are popular. Panels for countertops of this type are made from wood trimmings and sawdust. A toxic adhesive is added to the particleboard. MDF is produced using high pressure. At the moment of strong compression, a substance is released from the crushed wood, which is the adhesive base. Plates are covered with a special moisture-resistant film, which gives ample opportunities in the choice of colors and various patterns.
Advantages: light weight, ease of installation and processing, easy maintenance, low cost, quick production time. Disadvantages: short service life, low strength.
This manufacturing method is used when finishing the working surface of the countertop with tiles or mosaics. For this, a galvanized profile is used so that it does not rust, and moisture-proof drywall. This technology allows you to make any form of countertops. After it is ready, ceramic tiles or mosaics are laid on it.
Care for such a countertop is the same as for ceramic tiles. Advantages: versatility, durability, easy care. Disadvantages: complicated installation and dismantling.
Plastic countertops are light and durable, have different colors and shades, as well as low cost. Advantages: ductility, durability, easy care. Disadvantages: low strength, low heat resistance.
The parameters and dimensions of the countertops under the sink for the bathroom depend on the following indicators:
- the size of the room in which the installation is planned;
- size, for example, the width and shape of the shell (or shells, if there are more than one);
- the way she / they are installed;
- the material from which the countertop will be made.
Glass countertops have a more elegant and delicate shape. Models made of natural and artificial stone, plasterboard and natural wood will be more massive and bulky. Worktops made of MDF and particleboard will have average dimensions, something in between glass and stone products.
Today, there are many manufacturers of countertops for the bathroom sink, so choosing a decent sample will not be difficult. The main thing is to decide on the choice of material from which the surface will be made, discuss the timing, size and cost.
You need to pay attention to the fact that natural stone products are made to order for a long time, and if you are offered short production times, then it is worth considering. You can also familiarize yourself with the assortment of ready-made offers from large stores that sell goods for repair and interior decoration.
Among the manufacturers can be identified:
- Vitra. This is a company from Turkey, which in 2011 took a chance and offered cooperation to a designer from Russia - Dima Loginov. The designer countertop made of ceramics of his authorship is very popular. Over seven years of cooperation, several collections have been created.
- Ceramica Bardelli. This is new to sink countertops. This company recently began to attract both eminent and unknown designers to the development of its own collections. Ceramica Bardelli manufactures products based on sketches by renowned Piero Fornasetti, professional Luca Scacchetti, innovator Thord Buntier, Joe Ponti and others.
- Pamesa The company produces products under the logo of the Spanish designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada. A distinctive feature of this brand is expressive, dazzling, poisonous colors.
How to choose?
The sink top is a fairly new solution in the interior of bathrooms. The advantages of such countertops are that instead of various cabinets and shelves, you now have at your disposal a whole table on which you can store many accessories. Under the countertop, you can put a washing machine and any design with drawers.
The operation of such countertops is significantly different from the operation of the kitchen. There are more aggressive factors in the kitchen, for example, mechanical or high temperature influences. In the bathroom, they usually don’t cut vegetables, don’t beat meat and put hot pots on the surface. The main factors of the negative impact here are increased humidity and constant contact with water and various detergents.
The most durable and durable is stone. A well-made product will last for many decades. When choosing this material, it is necessary to take into account its large weight, high cost and a rather long production process.
Artificial stone is practically not inferior to natural in durability and strength, while having a lower cost. Also attracted by a huge selection of color and graphic solutions for countertops made of this material.
When choosing an artificial stone, you should know that on an acrylic stone, if the countertop consists of several parts, you can remove all seams and joints, giving the surface the appearance of a monolith. But on a quartz agglomerate, which is produced only in the form of tiles of a certain size, this will not work.
Glass tops may be the best option. With their average cost, you can get the aesthetic appearance of the bathroom and a good strength and durability of the product. This design fits harmoniously into the bathroom of any size. This type of product is made of tempered glass or laminated plexiglass. When it is broken, tempered glass crumbles into small cubes with edges that are difficult to cut about, and laminated plexiglass, when damaged, becomes cracked, but does not crumble into parts due to the film between the glass layers.
Even in emergency cases, the glass product is practically safe for humans.
The countertop under the sink for the bathroom from drywall is the choice of people who can make a beautiful interior with their own hands or want to realize their design project, and manufacturers of standard countertops do not take it. Also, with the help of such a design, it is possible to beat various disadvantages of the room.
The cost of the construction itself is relatively low, the final price will depend on the tiles or mosaics chosen for the final finish, and the size of the product.
A wooden countertop will fill the bathroom with the heat coming from natural wood, and the grace with which the wooden product fits into the design of tiles and metal is incomparable. But when choosing such a countertop, one must not forget that this material requires careful care, and the tree itself, in comparison with other materials for countertops, is quite soft, prone to deformation and moisture absorption.
It is desirable that in a room with a product of this kind good ventilation is installed and humidity does not accumulate.
The worktop from MDF or particleboard is today not only one of the most budgetary options, but also the most short-lived product for bathrooms. Despite the fact that manufacturers declare moisture-resistant materials used in the manufacture of countertops, practice shows that the service life of such products is much lower than that of all others.
When choosing a countertop from chipboard, you need to remember that the composition of which the countertop is made can be toxic. The fact is that the adhesive used in the manufacture of panels emits formaldehyde, which is harmful to human health. Therefore, pay attention to the E index indicated in the product documentation. If it is zero or one, then such material can be used at home.
Plastic countertop is the most budget option and has a corresponding appearance. When choosing plastic, you need to remember that it can be toxic.
How to make it yourself?
Not all types of countertops can be made independently. A surface of any stone and glass requires processing on special equipment and the application of certain skills and knowledge. To date, the countertop under the sink for the bathroom can be independently made of wood and drywall.
In the manufacture of wood worktops, we need a wooden plate according to the size of the worktop , moisture-proof impregnation for wooden coatings, joint sealant, tools. To begin with, we remove all sizes in the place where the countertop will be installed, think over the method of fastening. From a wooden workpiece using an electric jigsaw, we cut out the countertop, applying the sizes and shapes taken in advance in the bathroom.
After that, in the resulting countertop we make a hole for the siphon, if the sink is overhead, or cut a hole for the sink, if it is built-in. A hole is also made for the crane by its diameter, if it is mounted in a countertop, and not in a wall. If the countertop will have two or more sinks, then cut holes for all the elements. Along with this, you must make all the necessary holes in advance for attaching the countertop to the wall and / or floor, depending on its design.
When the shape of the countertop is ready and all the necessary holes are made, we proceed to the processing of the edges. For this we need sandpaper and a special machine. The entire surface of the worktop to be treated should be smooth and even after processing. Having finished processing the edges and holes, we proceed to cover the wood and all its ends with a moisture-resistant composition in accordance with the instructions on the package. The next step is varnishing, also according to the manufacturer's instructions. Moisture-resistant composition and varnish is preferably applied in several layers.
Do not forget about the ends, edges and holes. There, too, you need to process everything qualitatively. After the applied funds have completely dried, the countertop is ready for assembly. At the same time, all joints adjacent to the countertop, the walls of the sink and the faucet are necessarily treated with sealant. This will prevent moisture from entering and stagnating in hard-to-reach places.
The technology of independent production of countertops from MDF or particleboard is practically no different from the version with wood. You do not need varnish, moisture-resistant composition and sanding. But if the project countertops have rounded corners, then after cutting the ends of such corners will need to be glued with a special film. You won’t be able to do this on your own.
That is why a complex configuration of MDF or chipboard countertops with all the holes and bends in accordance with the project is better to immediately order the manufacturer of such products.
The manufacture of drywall countertops is a more complex process, but also gives more opportunities to make curved, rounded and other unusual forms of construction. We will need a moisture-proof drywall. It is sold with finished sheets. We calculate their number from the dimensions of the conceived tabletop and multiply by two, since the base is made in two layers.
We also need a profile, necessarily galvanized. It will be used in all supporting structures of the conceived countertop, and drywall will already be attached to it. Accordingly, the number of profiles depends on the size and configuration of the project. If bends on the surface of the product are conceived, it is best to purchase a flexible drywall for arches. You will also need screws for metal, glue for gluing drywall sheets, tile adhesive, tile or mosaic, moisture-proof sealant, joint sealant.
If you plan a curved design of the product, then only a mosaic is suitable as a lining.
When everything is ready for work, then proceed to the manufacture of the product. Having decided on the height at which the countertop will be located, draw a horizontal line and fasten the cut profile to the wall. If the structure will have several levels in height, then we fasten the profiles to the wall in accordance with the intended structure. After that, we also assemble the frame of our future table from the profiles. This type of countertop cannot be suspended, so do not forget to make supports. When the frame is assembled, sheathe it with sheets of drywall.
It should be noted that the drywall itself will not last long under the constant influence of moisture, so the better and more tightly the tile or mosaic is laid, the longer the assembled structure will last. The tile or mosaic not only creates a beautiful appearance, but also protects the table from moisture.
After the frame is sheathed with drywall and all the necessary holes are cut out, we begin facing with tiles or mosaics. The technology for laying tiles is the same as for walls and floors. When the tile or mosaic is laid, and all the seams are treated with sealant, we mount the sink, tap and siphon, we connect all communications.

When installing the structure under the sink in the bathroom, it is necessary to take into account its weight and method of attachment. Suspended structures represent the greatest danger, so you need to pay attention not only to the attachment of the countertop, but also to the strength of the wall to which they will be attached. The mounting bracket itself must be made of steel with an angular or square profile.
If the countertop is heavy, then there must be a diagonal reinforcement on the bracket. This bracket looks like a triangle. You can also use brackets in the form of squares or rectangles. The lower bar of such an arm can be used as an additional hanger for towels and similar things.
If the design is laid on and is installed on supports or legs, then it must be additionally attached to the wall, which eliminates its shifts in different directions.
All joints and places of accumulation of moisture must be treated with a moisture resistant polyurethane sealant. When manufacturing and installing drywall countertops, do not forget to leave the possibility of access to pipes and taps for servicing, repairing or replacing them. Otherwise, in the event of an emergency, you will have to destroy the fruits of your labor, and then spend time and money on recovery.
It is necessary to correctly produce the fasteners of the structure so that it will serve you for many years. You can embed it from the bottom or stick it on top. Remember to carefully close the gap.
