Summer is the time when you can eat and enrich yourself with vitamins without buying anything at the store, because there are trees and shrubs with berries. But it is difficult to reach some fruits because they are too high. For such cases, there are special devices that help both ordinary lovers of berries and experienced gardeners. To understand when special devices are used and how to use them, you should know how the whole berry collection takes place.
Usually, the picking of berries starts from the very bottom of the trees - from easily accessible places. Then they move on to inaccessible parts. There are several basic methods for picking fruit:
- with the help of devices;
- using a combine or other special machine.
The most common option is to pick berries manually.
This method is well suited for small trees and shrubs and is used in small areas. Special devices are used for hard-to-reach places when the berries cannot be obtained independently.
These devices are used in small areas when you need to do everything faster and without additional funds.
Separately, you can consider the combines and special machines that are most often used by experienced gardeners. This method involves the use of a mechanical arm or combine with an arch-type frame. A mechanical arm grabs a tree trunk and shakes off even the highest fruits. The harvester is used for mass harvesting in the fields due to the use of the brush system. But at home, under normal conditions, combines and special machines are not used, more often manual collection takes place.
Tall Tree Berry Tips
The simplest and most commonly used methods for picking fruit from tall trees are:
- use the stairs;
- shake the tree;
- pull up branches and collect manually.
Each of these methods has disadvantages.
- The use of stairs is not possible for trees with a thin trunk. Either you need a stepladder, which not everyone has, or additional help, which may not be nearby.
- After shaking, it is necessary to collect fruits from the ground, some can fly far away, some can get damaged, and some can even remain on the tree.
- Pulling the branches does not always succeed in reaching all the fruits, and if you overdo it, you can even break the branch. This method is more suitable for small trees, when you do not need to tighten the branches strongly.
To avoid problems with the most affordable and common methods of harvesting, experienced gardeners advise using special devices for picking berries from tall trees.
Such devices are called fruit raisers or fruit collectors. They can be purchased in stores or made independently.
There are many different options on the market for picking berries from tall trees. Prices and application features can be very different, so sometimes it’s easier to make the necessary device yourself. But both when buying, and when manually building a device for picking berries, one should take into account some of the features that a fruit collector should have:
- berry picking efficiency: speed and gentle harvesting;
- safety of use;
- device length is a determining factor for tall trees.
Having determined the necessary characteristics of the fruit shed, we can conclude that it is easier to buy or make such a device yourself. It should be borne in mind that with your own hands you can make not only a more suitable device, but also without any costs.
How to do it yourself?
Materials and manufacturing options for fruit collectors for collecting cherries and cherries may be different. Consider the most simple and affordable methods.
From a plastic bottle
For this fruit collector you will need:
- a tank (bottle) of 1 or 2 liters;
- stationery knife;
- handle of the required length;
Cut the bottle into 2 parts. At the top, a stick is inserted into the connector from under the cork - it and the handle will be the bottom of the fruit shed.
You need to fix the stick with a screw. And at the upper part formed, cuts of 2-4 centimeters in length are made, in which the cuttings of the berries will fall, and the fruits will fall into the tank.
From a plastic tube
To create a fruit collector you will need:
- a plastic or plastic tube of the required length and diameter so that berries can pass freely, this tube will need to be held vertically, so it should not be heavy and elastic;
- a knife that can cut the tube of the selected material;
- a heating element;
- reservoir for berries (cut off part of a 2 or 5 liter bottle).
One end of the tube must be slanted obliquely and a small trough up to 1 centimeter wide should be made at this end so that the cuttings of berries can fit into it, but the berries themselves do not pass.
The top of the end where the trough is located should be bent by heating the material and exposing the heated part to some tool.
The other end of the tube is also slanted obliquely and placed in a tank where the berries will go down. The section of the part in the tank should be no more than the height of the tank itself so that the berries do not fall out, but not much less so that congestion does not occur. The container and tank can also be fastened by heating.
From a can
This is a fruit shed that is not safe and is not recommended for use by children. To create, you will need:
- metal cutter;
- handle of the required length;
- two nails or screws.
On the one hand, the jar must be closed or a collection tank should be attached to its open side, and on the other hand, the middle should be cut with a cutter so that there are cloves from the sides that will grasp the berries.
Then you should attach a handle to the jar with nails or screws.
And from nails or wire, you can build a device that will facilitate the collection of fruits from the tree. Having a house with a long curved nail or hard wire can be the basis for creating a hook. They may be needed when picking berries from thin branches, which can be broken inadvertently, or from trees of medium height, when some branch is required to just pull up a little. There are two ways to make a hook.
This will require:
- wire length of 1 meter or more;
- rag rope.
It is necessary to bend the wire from both ends. On the one hand to make it in the form of a hook, and on the other to bend a little more - this will be the handle. Wrap the resulting handle with a rope to make it easier to hold.
From the nail
This will require:
- a bent nail or a straight, which in the future will have to be bent;
- a wooden handle of the required length (preferably round (like a shovel from a shovel) and not very heavy, because it will have to be lifted);
- a hammer.
If the nail is already bent, then we simply drive it into one of the ends of the wooden handle, if not, we drive in an even nail and then bend it with a hammer. In order for the harvest to be faster and easier, it is not necessary to spend money on the purchase of special equipment. You can just be smart and independently build a device for collecting cherries.
