Many people like to grow various indoor plants in their homes. Nowadays, beautiful decorative cacti are being placed in homes more and more. Today we will talk about plants called rebucia.
Rebucia is a type of dwarf cactus. Argentina is considered her homeland, but in the wild it can grow in America, Asia, Australia. According to the description, such tiny cacti have beautiful spherical stems. However, they grow with a large number of thorns. The length of these plants most often does not exceed 5-7 centimeters.
Cactus flowers have a bright orange color (sometimes they grow with a red, yellow or pink tint). They grow one at a time. The shape of such buds is funnel-shaped. They are covered with a beautiful glossy sheen.
Flowering of this cactus lasts from April to June. Each bud is fully revealed only on a sunny day. At night, the flowers fold their petals. They are formed either at the base of the stem, or on its sides.
The first time the plant begins to bloom only in the second year.
Rebucia is represented by various types of indoor decorative cacti, each of which has its own special name:
- minuscule (tiny);
- Kreinz rebutia;
- Rebucia Marsoner;
- Rebucia Kupper;
- albiflora (white-flowered).
The minuscule is a whole group of cacti of different subtypes. This variety has a spherical, slightly flattened stem, covered with white spines (with no central spine). Its diameter can reach 5 centimeters. Small tubercles on it are arranged in the form of a spiral.
The flowers of this species are large. They have a bright red or raspberry color. After flowering is complete, small red berries appear on the cactus. The minuscule is subdivided into several species. Among them, senilis is distinguished. Such a cactus grows with elongated soft spines of a white color. And the flowers of this variety are distinguished by a more saturated and bright red hue.
Also in this group a Wessner variety is distinguished. It has a more elongated stem, which has a cylindrical shape. Its diameter can reach 8-10 centimeters, and height - 7 centimeters. Compared to other types, in Wessner's rebutia, the stem has a more saturated bright green color. She has central spines, but they are poorly expressed. Red flowers with a whisk. Their diameter is 4-5 cm.
The same group also includes Rebucia Violaciflora. She is distinguished by beautiful red-violet large flowers. Moreover, their petals after full disclosure are strongly bent outward. Flowering in this species is plentiful. It begins in early spring.
The flowers of this variety grow with a bright orange color and have a slightly elongated funnel shape. The diameter of the opened flower can reach 6 cm. The surface of such a cactus is completely covered with gray-white soft and fluffy thorns that are woven together.
It has the appearance of a spherical cactus of saturated green color. Its thickness can be 5-7 centimeters. The surface of this houseplant is covered with sharp long spikes of yellow color. Golden-throated rebutia is characterized by abundant flowering. The flowers after full opening become bright yellow with a slight red tint. They grow with a whisk.
The stem has a cylindrical, slightly elongated shape. Its height does not exceed 2 cm, it is completely covered with long and small spines of white color. The flowers have a bright red color. Sometimes they have a slight orange tint. The shape of the buds is funnel-shaped. Pestle and stamens of a cactus are painted yellow.
This cactus has the shape of a ball of light green color. Its height does not exceed 4-5 centimeters. The thorns on it are gray-white. They grow small and intertwined. The flowers are in the shape of a deep funnel. They are painted in a bright red tone. The buds are almost the same size as the stem.
The light green spherical stem is covered with small tubercles. In addition, brown small spikes can be seen on it. This variety blooms in the spring. Thin elongated petals are painted in bright yellow tones. They grow with a whisk. The shape of the flowers is funnel-shaped.
Such rebuition does not tolerate temperature extremes and lower temperatures.
On the stem you can see a dense network of gray-white spines-bristles that are intertwined with each other. The flowers are funnel-shaped. Their inner part is painted in a golden-red tint. The outer part grows brown. This species blooms from late spring to mid-summer.
The stem of this variety grows in the form of a slightly flattened ball. Its diameter reaches 5-6 cm, it is covered with a large number of thin elongated spines of gray shade. Long rounded to the ends of the petals of a bright red color. The diameter of each flower can reach 4 centimeters. Pestle and stamens of a white-yellow hue.
It is a miniature cactus of rich green color. It is covered with numerous thin and long intertwining thorns. Large-sized flowers. They have a red color with a slight orange or yellow tint. Stamens and pestle are yellow-white.
Albiflora (white flowered)
Small stems are completely covered with fluffy white coating. Snow-white buds of large size. Their diameter reaches 4-6 cm. Petals can appear with a slight pink or cream tint.
If you want to grow rebucia at home, then you should carefully monitor its care, including watering, feeding. Otherwise, the cactus will not be able to live long.
For the normal cultivation of such a cactus, it is worthwhile to ensure that watering is uniform. Their number depends on the rate of evaporation of moisture from the soil and on the climate in the home. In the summer, only one watering per week will be enough. But during intense heat, their number can be slightly increased.
In winter, you need to monitor the temperature in the room where the plant is located. If it is warm, then watering can be minimized. It is recommended to moisturize rebucia with clean water, previously defended for one day. You must also take into account its temperature. It should be 2-3 degrees higher. Wash and spray the plant is not worth it.
It is better to remove dust with a soft dry brush.
This type of cactus can not be fertilized at all. But in order to provide the plant with more abundant and beautiful flowering, some top dressing should be applied. Do it from April to September. Remember that such procedures are recommended not more than once a month.
Top dressing is done with non-concentrated solutions of special complexes intended for cacti. Moreover, you can make them only on a slightly moistened substrate in advance. In the cold season, fertilizers can not be applied. Do not forget that you need to select top dressings with a minimum content or complete absence of nitrogen-containing compounds. After all, they can cause rotting of the root system.
In order for a plant to look healthy and beautiful, it must regularly receive enough light. Rebucia is not afraid of direct sunlight, so you can safely put it on the southern windows.
If you put a cactus on the northern windows, then you can use small fluorescent lamps. They will be able to provide the required lighting. If Rebucia does not receive a sufficient amount of light, then it will be greatly extended, as a result of which it will lose its beautiful decorative appearance. Also, the plant may stop flowering.
Before planting a cactus, you need to choose a suitable container for this. For such an indoor plant, wide pots of small depth are perfect . After all, their root system is growing rapidly and requires more space.
Remember that a cactus must be planted or transplanted only from dry ground to dry ground. It is impossible to water soil during this. Prepared soil can be bought in specialized stores. Soil can be made by ourselves from peat, turf land and clean sand. Good drainage must be laid at the bottom of the tank .
Such a cactus can be grown even in open ground. It will look great along with garden decorative flowers. At the same time, the irrigation regime remains the same as for those plants that grow at home.
But with severe frosts and frequent heavy rains, rebutia must be well closed. Otherwise, it will begin to rot and eventually die.
The best time to transplant this indoor plant is spring. The procedure should be carried out 1 time in 2 years. Carry it out in case of strong proliferation of stems. If by this time the buds had completely formed, then the transplant is postponed until the flowering is over. When carrying out such a procedure, the soil is left the same in which the cactus originally grew.
Rebucia is easily propagated by seed. In this case, they are taken from cracked ripened fruits. They are pre-treated with a solution of potassium permanganate. They start to sprout quite quickly. When young plants begin to grow a little, they need to be transplanted into separate containers. But pre-pots are completely filled with a prepared mixture, which consists of turf soil, peat, river sand.
Rebucia can multiply and lateral shoots. Indeed, with normal growth and development, a large number of shoots are formed on the cactus. In spring or summer, they can be carefully separated from the stem. Damaged areas are best treated with charcoal. Collected processes must be left to dry during the day. After that, they are planted in moist sand, which is preheated.
Diseases and Pests
Often such a cactus undergoes root decay. This happens due to excessive watering, too low indoor temperatures or due to the large amount of nitrogen in the soil. To avoid rotting the roots, you should follow some simple rules.
So, remember that it is best to use loose soil, apply good drainage.
In addition to the roots, rot can also appear on the stems of a cactus. This can happen due to frequent watering, when the plant is at rest in a cool room. In this case, the soil is no longer moistened until the stem dries out a little.
Sometimes cork structures form on the plant. They appear due to significant mechanical damage to the stems. They also form due to hypothermia, too rare watering in the hot season. The cactus can be damaged due to the appearance of a spider mite or mealybug. In this case, you must first carefully remove all insects from the plant. Do this with a cloth dipped in an alcohol solution.
After removal of parasites, sick cacti should be treated. For this, it is better to use effective chemicals. So, you can use Actellik or Fitoverm. As a preventative measure, you can periodically look at the plant and check it for pests and sometimes wipe it with a brush dipped in alcohol.
